rainforest research expedition
The Rainforest Research Expedition offers a hands-on opportunity to conduct real conservation research in Costa Rica’s cloudforests within the Talamanca Mountain Range, one of the most biologically rich regions in Central America. Expeditions take place in the Alexander Skutch Biological Corridor and nearby Cloudbridge Nature Reserve, areas critical for biodiversity conservation and scientific study.
Participants actively support ongoing research by learning and applying a variety of biodiversity monitoring and field survey techniques. Activities may include camera trap deployment and data collection, vegetation and habitat surveys, bird monitoring, moth and insect studies, stream and freshwater surveys, and nocturnal wildlife surveys, offering exposure to multiple research disciplines and field methods.
Accommodations are designed to foster cultural exchange and immersion, with participants staying in local homestay families or shared dorm-style lodging near the research sites. This expedition is ideal for students, educators, and conservation-minded travelers seeking meaningful field experience, skill development, and direct involvement in active research and conservation efforts.
Also available as an add-on to a York University Study Abroad course.
